What Are Other People Wearing?

The only thing that will make you happy is being happy with who you are, and not who people think you are.

Over on The Messy Heads Blog, Emma Mercury, wrote a blog post about our style instinct and the way we can be influenced into wearing what people expect us to, or what we and others have labeled our style to be. Link to the post: Style Instinct. I also, like Emma, can often find myself looking at an item of clothing and thinking…would people think I’m cool if I wear this? Or would you call this vintage? And is this what other people are wearing? Instead of, hey, this is rad, I like this!

And that is the beautiful thing about ones style; it is completely and utterly yours. It doesn’t have to make sense, it just has to represent who you are and what you like. So, just like Emma did, I decided to challenge myself. I  scrolled through my Tumblr and Pintrest, only giving myself a few seconds to decided whether I liked something or not and then saved it to a folder. No influencing, no major thought; just an instinct, gut feeling of a yes or no.

I was surprised actually. I found that I like a range of different things and I plan on trying to do this often. Maybe making a scrapbook of things that catch my eye just to remind myself that my style is just that; mine. It comes down to what you love, not what other people think or are wearing. Does wearing double denim make you happy? Go for it! Do you love stripes and want to buy another to add to your already excessive collection? I do.

I’ve put together some of the few I came across and given a brief description of why I liked it, or why it caught my eye.

The funny thing is that a lot of this stuff I really love, but something in my mind tells me that I would be to scared to wear it in public. Why? Probably people and what they would think about it. I think it’s time to stop clouding my mind up with those thoughts and instead, simply, not care. Harder said than done but give this a go! Not in the intention of buying anything, but just to see what you end up with. Trust your instinct, not people’s influence!!
